How Cute! Today’s Attitude Test talks about Baby Sounds, Citizen Science and Zooniverse.org
Via the crowd sourcing website Zooniverse.org there are millions of citizen
scientists participating in 1 or more of the currently 100 plus projects.
From identifying galaxies to counting wild life to transcribing hand written
texts to digital form, most of these projects are dependent on people who
can look at the screen. There are a few, however, that are audio-based, and
so are accessible to screen reader users who want to contribute. This week
on The Attitude Test, heard today at 18:00 UTC, that’s 1 pm Eastern, 10:00
Pacific in North America, 6 pm in the UK and 7 pm in Central Europe we’ll
be talking to Chiara Semenzin of École normale supérieure (Paris),
formerly of Edinburgh University, who is the lead
researcher of one such project, The Maturity of Baby Sounds, that was just
in beta, and is about to go public on the site. In this project, volunteers
listen to short audio clips, and classify them into 1 of 4 types of vocal
baby sounds, or as junk: breathing sounds or sounds not made by the child.
The goal of this project is to study the developement of speech as children
get older, including adding data from speakers of various languages. A lot
can be learned about their language development from some of the very first
sounds that they make. With at least a few thousand people all working on
the same data, many hours of recording can be more quickly combed through
and each bit of baby babble classified for easy indexing and study.
